Fall Fun for Fast Finishers

“Fall Fun for Fast Finishers” is a free packet of  20 open-ended task cards from Rachel Lynette at Minds in Bloom.  Her packet is available for free download from Teachers Pay Teachers.  You do have to be a member in order to receive the download, but it is free to register.

I love one of the sample cards that Rachel displays in her blog post, which asks you to pretend you are Autumn (the season) and you are running for president against the other three seasons.  What a creative idea!

On a side note, Teachers Pay Teachers can be a goldmine for lesson ideas.  There are many, many free activities available.  It is well worth registering.

DIY

Don’t worry; I promise this is not going to be an advertisement for a home improvement network…

DIY is one of the coolest new sites that I’ve chanced upon in a long, long time.  I haven’t even shown it to my students yet, and I am super excited about it.  This is going to be something awesome, I have a feeling.

DIY offers kids the chance to earn Skill Badges by doing challenges.  After browsing through the skills and challenges, I was ready to start earning my own badges.  The challenges look fun, and since I never got a chance to participate in Girl Scouts, the virtual badges seem like the next best thing to me.  For example, how would you like to earn your Papercrafter badge by doing 3 challenges (out of 13 choices) that include making a walkalong glider or building a paper vehicle?

Most of the challenges include instructions, either with video or pictures. There is a great parent info page, along with a Parent Dashboard once you sign up.  DIY kids get their own website to show off what they make, and there is a supporting iOS app to easily upload videos and pictures of their creations.  The site seems very user-friendly and, best of all, encourages kids to be creative and inventive.

Leave No Child Inside

“Leave No Child Inside:  How Nature Benefits Children” is a blog post on Roots of Action that showcases a video from the “No Child Left Inside Coalition” as well as some ideas for outdoor activities for children and families.  The video shows the importance of outdoor education, and the post by Marilyn Price-Mitchell also offers a list of other valuable resources.  I think that we often forget that taking the classroom outdoors can be an easy way to engage kids in learning.

Writing Prompts About Personhood

I have mentioned Luke Neff’s Writing Prompt site before in My Favorite Online Writing Tools post, but I recently found a page of collected prompts that he had done on one theme – personhood.  My 4th graders are discussing the Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Intelligences right now, and these prompts are great discussion topics.  If you are looking for inspiring journal entries, want to delve into the Multiple Intelligences, or just want to spark some new conversations in your class, post one of these slides on your screen!

Easter Creative Thinking Packet

I have added an Easter Creative Thinking Packet to my Teachers Pay Teachers store.  It is now available for $1.00.  It includes brainstorming ideas, as well as printable worksheets for each of the S.C.A.M.P.E.R. creative thinking tools created by Bob Eberle.  My gifted students in 1st-5th enjoy these S.C.A.M.P.E.R. packets, as the activities give them the chance to stretch their imaginations.  We are in the home stretch right now for the school year, and thinking outside the Easter basket could lessen some of the stress!

Piece of Mind

Following along with yesterday’s post on Brain Games, KB Connected brought another site to my attention that allows you learn more about the way the mind works.  This one, Piece of Mind, uses flash-based games in order to help you “train your brain” in the areas of Memory, Attention, Executive Function, Logic & Reasoning, and Visual Perception.  My favorite game was “Triplets”, which is similar to the card game, “Set.”  I did horribly on “Face It” – mostly because it took me a few minutes to figure out what I was doing.
The site appears to be a work in progress, as some of the links do not lead to anything, and it advertises that more games will be “coming soon.”  It will be interesting to see what is added in the coming months.
